On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, in this webinar we talk about how we can sustain our mental health to increase our productivity without burning out.
The webinar, given by Aline Aguilar, an educational and organizational psychologist with more than twenty years of experience, discussed the topic of burnout, how to prevent and be done with it for good.
Burnout is an increasingly relevant issue in the workplace. It is important to take measures to prevent our collaborators from being overwhelmed and, above all, demotivated. Online and home office work has prompted us to be active more than the hours we normally work. That is why many companies are becoming aware of making changes.
This initiative that we have at SYAAT serves to provide our community with more than just what has to do with technology, in order to form a healthy community that can develop better in its activities.
The psychologist Aline told us that self-knowledge is essential to know how we react, why we react that way and what our red flags are to know when we are crossing our limits, and decide which battles we are going to fight and which ones to let go to avoid burnout and improve our mental health.
We also learned that stress is divided in two: positive stress and negative stress. Eustress refers to the positive side, it is a beneficial issue because it motivates us, it is a biochemical change in our system that can help us, and it literally means “good stress.” Distress is the negative part, which is experienced as anguish and suffering; It happens when a person is unable to adapt effectively to threatening factors, and it is an inadequate psycho-physiological activation that leads to failure.
When our body has a saturation of negative chemical and neurological substances caused by distress, which prevent us from reacting effectively, then it becomes burnout; This is a chronic stress disorder characterized by intense and continuous fatigue that does not improve with rest
Burnout, also known as occupational burnout syndrome, or fatigue syndrome, is the increase in exhaustion or weakness, which can lead us to suffer not only depression and anxiety, but also to have a low work performance.
To prevent burnout, the first thing we need to understand is that within each person there is a neutral space, a center, and that we must find this place where we can take refuge if we are directly affected by a situation. How can this internal center be reached? By pausing and asking yourself: what is happening?, how am I feeling? Taking a break is giving yourself the opportunity to get to know yourself.
Some factors that help us disconnect and generate this positive feedback are: breathing exercises, meditation, mindfulness practices or writing; The latter is very important because it is a way of helping our mind to let go and download our anxieties, to take a breath and find our inner center.
Today we have very dynamic and fast lives that do not allow us to pause or reflect. It is important to be responsible, but above all, to be aware of this to make good decisions when distress begins, this way we will avoid reaching burnout.
